This enlightening and beautifully drawn analysis of life and Zen is told in the form of a mature fable that follows a wise old cat as he traverses the world in pursuit of unending learning and imparts his knowledge along the way. Both the text and the illustrations in this book were created by the same group of people who were responsible for the worldwide bestseller Big Panda and Tiny Dragon.

A sage old cat living in a distant city is convinced that he is the most knowledgeable being in the area until he learns that there is a pine tree with unfathomable knowledge concealed in its branches somewhere. Because of this, the Cat decides to embark on a lengthy journey into the forest in order to locate the tree. During his travels, he meets a number of interesting new people, such as the Hare, the Magpie, the Wolf Cub, the Monkey, the Tortoise, and the Tiger. He also comes across an active kitten. What wisdom does the Cat already possess that he can impart to his companions, and what wisdom does he still need to acquire before he can do so? The Cat Who Taught Zen is a stunning book that has an ethereal quality to it and illustrations that are reminiscent of Zen koans in both style and content.

The Cat Who Taught Zen Book Summary

This is a profound and thoughtful tale about a cat who is a teacher of Zen, and it is beautifully illustrated. When I started reading this book, I knew nothing about zen, but by the time I finished it, I felt as like I needed and wanted to start incorporating some of its fundamentals into my life. It’s a story that will warm your heart about the importance of taking care of yourself and the people around you, as well as about how it’s okay to not have all the answers to life’s questions but to make the most of the journey while you still can. The afterword was also highly helpful, and it contributed significantly to the process of developing the ideas presented in the book.
