When I woke up this morning, I had no idea that Boston crime lord Walker McManus would be my first massage client of the day. Nor did I anticipate the dangerously gorgeous criminal offering to give me the message in exchange for $50,000. And the surprises just keep on coming. For the simple reason that Walker wants more than one session. Oh, no. He hopes to have them for the rest of his life. Join me. And no is not a word he often encounters.

The Mobster’s Masseuse Book Summary

Although I also liked Preacher Man by Jessa Kane, this one was the first of hers that I truly got into. In contrast to Preacher Man, I found the writing and story in this book to be far more compelling. Both books are unique and it would be unfair to compare them.

Okay, here we go with my review:

In a good spirit, I’ll begin by listing some of the things I enjoy:

Walker’s caring attitude towards Meadow and, more so, Richie, won my heart. Truthfully, Richie has my undying devotion. Richie was such a great sidekick, and he played a crucial role in the story since he showed Meadow and the readers a softer, more sympathetic side of Walker. It’s not often that I really connect with a book’s protagonist, but Walker was an exception. However, I did not appreciate his possessive nature. I realise this is a prevalent trope in erotic and mafia fiction, yet it still bothers me every time I encounter it in a book. As a couple, Meadow and Walker were instantly appealing to me. I couldn’t help but chuckle at their witty exchanges and the ensuing lustful mayhem.

Now, for the bad news:

Not a fan of possessiveness, but I’ll give this book a chance because I enjoy erotica and, more recently, gangster stories. It bothered me that the entire book took place on the same day. It was hard to imagine that all that happened in this novel happened in just one day. Even though it’s a novella, you can make it seem like days or weeks have passed. On day one, they started talking about each other, and that was a major source of anxiety for me. To top it all off, the use of the diminutive “my king” made me want to vomit, but hey, if that’s Walker’s thing, then more power to him (and no, I’m not jealous).

After a two-month reading dry spell, I broke out of my funk and zipped through this book. I’m glad I picked this up, and I’ll be looking for other novels from Jessa Kane in the future.
