In a spine-tingling book, Robert Dugoni’s Detective Tracy Crosswhite coaxes a dormant serial murderer out of hiding.

Tracy Crosswhite has revived the search for the Route 99 serial killer in Seattle. The public’s wrath was sparked by the fact that, after thirteen victims, he ceased hunting. Nearly 30 years after his first murder, Tracy is being counted on to vindicate the Seattle Police Department and offer closure to the victims’ families. It doesn’t matter if she has to collaborate with Captain Johnny Nolasco, her archenemy.

Nolasco, the original task force’s lead detective, challenges Tracy to do what he was unable to do. When Tracy and Nolasco, now partners in an uncomfortable relationship, investigate fresh leads and follow up on old ones, they find high-level corruption and cover-ups that are just as dangerous as the elusive killer. Such lethal and potent forces will go to any lengths to avoid coming to light.

And that’s exactly where Tracy and Nolasco are going: to uncover the macabre details of a serial killer’s disappearance and terrifying return.

One Last Kill Book Summary

The eleventh installment in the riveting Tracy Crosswhite series follows the Seattle homicide detective as he investigates cold cases. Though it may be read on its own, readers who have read the novella “The Last Line” and the book What She Found before this one will get much more out of it. Not my favourite in the series, but still quite good; I especially liked how Tracy and her archenemy Johnny Nolasco were portrayed.

When the Chief of Police makes a public announcement that Tracy is to revive the investigation into the Route 99 serial killer, who murdered thirteen people 25 years ago and then mysteriously stopped, Tracy is given a poisoned chalice. Her former commanding officer, Captain Nolasco, never recovered professionally from the task force’s abject failure to apprehend the murderer. Now it seems he’s back, forcing Tracy to cooperate with Nolasco despite their mutual dislike. With corruption tainting the system, though, will they be able to uncover the truth in time to stop him from striking again?

Tracy’s realism and relatability in this series are major draws for me. Dujonei skill lies in the way she progressively reveals another side to Nolasco, who has been the annoying thorn in her side throughout the series. The mystery was satisfactory; I incorrectly identified the murderer, but otherwise enjoyed it, despite being let down by the resolution. I’m delighted to hear that the show will go on, however I do wish he’d stop writing about serial killers. Enough already! A review copy was provided courtesy of NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer. On October 3rd, One Last Kill will be released.
