A Young Woman…

Poppy’s life has never been her own because she was destined from birth to usher in a new era. The Maiden leads a lonesome existence. Never to be handled again. Not worth a second glance. The one who must never speak again. To be deprived of all happiness forever. Instead of preparing to be deemed worthy by the gods, she would rather be with the guards fighting back against the evil that took her family on the day of her Ascension. However, she has never had a say in the matter.

A Duty…

The destiny of the country rests on Poppy’s shoulders, a fate she may not even desire for herself. The heart of a Maiden is pure and selfless. And a heart that beats and a soul that yearns. Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor-bound to protect her Ascension, has just entered her life, further entwining fate, obligation, and desire. He infuriates her by making her rethink her beliefs and offering her forbidden pleasures.

A monarchy…

An ancient country, abandoned by the gods and shunned by humans alike, has risen from the ashes, intent on reclaiming what it believes is rightfully its own by any means necessary, including bloodshed and revenge. The boundary between what is forbidden and what is right blurs as the spectre of the cursed grows closer. When every bloody thread that holds Poppy’s world together breaks, she risks not only losing her heart and being deemed unfit by the gods, but also her life.

From Blood and Ash Book Summary

Poppy, the protagonist of From Blood and Ash, is a divinely-selected virgin. She is not meant to be stared at, touched, or subjected to anything less than the divine. She is about to turn nineteen and will soon travel to the capital to undergo her Ascension, a ritual during which she will show her worthiness to the gods and aid in protecting the kingdom from a curse brought by those who are unworthy of the gods. However, there is a hidden kingdom that would stop at nothing to prevent Poppy from achieving her Ascension and bringing about change. (I’m being intentionally vague since the supernatural elements of this book enriched my reading experience in ways I never could have imagined had I known about them beforehand.)

Poppy, however, is keeping many things a secret, one of which being the growing strength of her own special abilities to read and calm the emotions of others. There’s also the mystery of what happened to Poppy’s family, leaving her and her brother to carry out the gods’ will, all while Poppy bears the physical and mental wounds of that terrible night. Additionally, she is being abused behind closed doors in the castle where she is presently residing with the Duke and Duchess. At the beginning of the first book, Poppy decides to spend the night away from the palace so that she can perhaps have some new experiences without the burden of being expected to be a pure vessel for the god’s consumption alone. Poppy gets a taste of what she has been missing and what she may desire for herself when she locks horns with Hawke, a very young but very talented guard, in a tavern’s private area.
You’re just a typical young lady. What’s harmful for you is what society dictates.

Conclusion

The plot seems to revolve around loss and abuse, and it’s interesting to see how those two concepts can take on so many forms. Poppy’s existence, like the country she lives in, relies on a variety of scare tactics to maintain order and obedience to a corrupt system. Saying you’re doing good when you’re actually serving the gods is a common ploy. In the end, this is a swoon-worthy and angst-inducing paranormal romance narrative, but I hope readers and listeners are paying close attention to all the details!
You are deserving of better than what is ahead.

You’ll find some insightful conversations about the difficulties of coming of age and separating yourself from the expectations of others, as well as your own, in this book. This is a really consent-focused and sex-positive book. I’m going to type this while clenching my chest and then pretend I didn’t just do that, but I found the descriptions of orgasms (and other bodily reactions) to be quite believable and well-done in this novel.
