The gods did it a long time ago. All but nine major cities were hit. Guardianroyalty who feed on mortal pleasure now rule each city, which is separated from the others by huge wilderness rife with beasts and unthinkable horrors.
Calista has innate psychic abilities and is well aware of the value her skills hold to the world’s power brokers; she chooses to conceal her identity by working as the Baron of Archwood’s courtesan. She offers him knowledge in exchange for his safety.
When her gut tells her to save a lost prince, the voice in her head screams with warning and promise. He’s going to make her day today. He will be her undoing one day.
Calista becomes the travelling prince’s temporary companion after catching the attention of both the Baron and the prince. However, there is unrest in the city, and with knights and monsters outside the city gates and a hungry prince in her bed, she may need more than her intuition to keep her safe.
Calista can either trust her gut and be safe, or she can listen to her heart and end up in danger.

Fall of Ruin and Wrath Book Summary
Reading another fantastic novel by Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of my guilty pleasures. I have a glass of wine in the mellow light of my study while I become lost in the fascinating world she has crafted. Her characters never fail to draw me in, and the tension and chemistry between them only increase as the story progresses.
She has done it again with her current book; it is an excellent read. She gives us a fantastic, badass protagonist, whom I like even better than her prior characters. In every section, the focus is on this spunky, sympathetic, and dogged main character. And let us not overlook Thorne, our mysterious and magnetic hero. As we dive deeper into their action-packed and suspenseful trip, we find great satisfaction in the enemies-to-lovers and hate-at-first-sight dynamic between them, which is propelled by their clever banter.
Calista, our main character, is a talented mind reader and an abandoned street kid who grew up without a family. But things turn around for the better when, in exchange for his protection, she agrees to be the hidden courtesan of Baron Archwood. But one day her gut instinct takes her to a wandering prince in a terrible crisis. She is thrown into a world of revolt, dread, and fist fights as a result of her brave act, but she rises to the challenge and becomes the prince’s travelling companion. Calista is split between her gut instinct, which could save her life, and her emotional attachment to a path that could lead to her demise.
Without giving too much away, just know that there will be plenty of dramatic cliffhangers and surprising turns throughout the novel, in the usual Armentrout style.
The book is well worth your time, despite its length and extremely slow burn, which are the only two reasons I didn’t give it five stars. There are a large number of likeable supporting characters in the story. The magic system and the world-building, which combine elements of high fantasy and dystopia, are expertly carried out. The major characters in this series, especially Poppy, made a stronger impression on me than any of her other protagonists. The shocking last twist has me anxiously awaiting the continuation of the story. I have to know what happens in the next book immediately.
