There is a new primal force on the rise. It’s official: the former Queen of Flesh and Fire is now the Primal of Blood and Bone. And Casteel, Poppy, and their comrades have only just begun to fight the battle they have been preparing for. All around Iliseeum and the mortal realm, gods are waking up in anticipation of the impending war.

When Poppy enters stasis, however, Cas must face the terrifying prospect that the unintended effects of what she is becoming will ultimately separate them. While Cas waits for her gorgeous eyes to open again, he takes comfort in some sound advice: Talk to her.

Then he does it. He fills Poppy in on the backstory of how they got started, including information about himself that is known only to Kieran. No one knows what she’ll find when she wakes up, or how much the realm and Cas will have changed.

Begining of the Plot

There is a new primordial force on the rise. It’s official: the former Queen of Flesh and Fire is now the Primal of Blood and Bone. And Casteel, Poppy, and their friends have only just started to wage this war. The gods of Iliseeum and the mortal world are reawakening in preparation for the next conflict.

However, Cas must confront the very real risk that Poppy may be taken from him by the tragic, unanticipated effects of what she is becoming if Poppy enters stasis. Cas is offered some counsel, though, and it is this: Talk to her. He vows to hold on to this while he waits to see her gorgeous eyes open again. Sure enough, he goes ahead and does it. In doing so, he reveals some personal information about himself to Poppy that only Kieran has access to.

No one knows what she’ll find when she wakes up, or how much the realm and Cas will have changed. #1 In the third book of her Blood and Ash trilogy, Jennifer L. Armentrout, a New York Times best-selling novelist, returns to the sweeping romance between Poppy and Casteel. This time, though, Hawke will be the narrator.

A Soul of Ash and Blood Book Summary

Casteel’s point of view is presented in A Soul of Ash and Blood, which is essentially a retelling of From Blood and Ash. Casteel’s narration of events from the past to Poppy is mixed with chapters set in the present day in A Soul of Ash and Blood.

Retellings of a story from the perspective of a different character are fascinating, but they can become tedious after a while (cough, Midnight Sun, cough). A Soul of Ash and Blood is refreshingly original because it incorporates Casteel’s historical perspective without halting the forward momentum of the story.

Nonetheless, there are a few spots where the narrative gets a little choppy since Casteel is out doing dull guard stuff while Poppy takes centre stage. The result is an occasional sense of disconnection between chapters.

My favourite part of A Soul of Ash and Blood was getting to know Casteel on a personal level. Insight into the extent of Casteel’s anguish as a result of his history isn’t provided until later in the series. His account of his trauma is both real and tragic in its depth.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how the format of A Soul of Ash and Blood allowed Armentrout to satisfy fans with Casteels point of view while simultaneously making considerable progress in the tale.
