This perspective seeks to reinstate the significance of the divine feminine within the Christian tradition.

The present work entails the inaugural comprehensive translation into English of the authentic Coptic Gospel of Mary, accompanied by meticulous line-by-line analysis.

This statement highlights the prominence of the concept of the divine feminine within Christian theological discourse.

This work presents a novel viewpoint of the life of a very contentious individual within the Western spiritual heritage.

Mary Magdalene has been a subject of extensive discussion and dispute within the field of biblical research. Mary Magdalene, also recognised as Miriam of Magdala, holds significance in early Christianity as she is regarded by the apostle John as the individual responsible for establishing the foundations of the faith. This distinction stems from her role as the primary witness to the Resurrection, being the first to encounter the risen Jesus. In numerous theological analyses, she has commonly been portrayed as a reformed individual engaged in prostitution, serving as an exemplar of Christ’s benevolence towards sinners who have undergone redemption.

The contemporary reader is able to contemplate their involvement within the gospels of Philip, Thomas, Peter, and Bartholomew. These texts, sometimes referred to as the Gnostic gospels, were not accepted by the early Christian church. The gospel attributed to Mary is included in this collection, however, its existence has hitherto remained undisclosed to the general world.

The translation of the Gospel of Mary from the Coptic by Jean-Yves Leloup, an Orthodox theologian, along with his comprehensive and insightful commentary on this text, is being introduced in English for the first time in this publication. The combination of the gospel text and Lelo up’s spiritual exegesis offers distinct lessons that highlight the prominence of the divine feminine and a lasting appreciation for nature, in contrast to the dualistic and austere interpretations of Christianity found in other sources. The analysis of this significant primary text and accompanying commentary reveals a resurgence of the concept of the holy feminine within the Western spiritual heritage, as well as a fresh perspective on Christian ideology and belief that extends globally.

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene Book Summary

Upon engaging with the Gnostic Gospels, namely the Gospel of Mary, I have developed a heightened appreciation for the opportunity to directly examine this particular text. The commentary provided by Lelo Up offers a compelling and valuable perspective for comprehending and scrutinising the lessons referenced in this gospel, as well as in the canonical gospels that are widely recognised and accepted within institutional contexts.

Upon careful examination of this material, I anticipate gaining a significantly altered viewpoint of the teachings of Christ. This experience provided me with a fresh perspective on the concepts of “law” and “grace” within Christian beliefs, which was notably more optimistic in nature.

It has been noted that the laws/commandments might be perceived as tools of liberation that furnish individuals with a framework for leading a contented existence (in the form of blessings and a blueprint for happiness), while also granting them the autonomy to discover happiness inside themselves and in their relationships with others. In addition, it provided a complementary perspective to the established gospels by emphasising the quest of spiritual well-being rather than materialistic gratification.

The commentary provided an intriguing interpretation of the passage, suggesting that it promotes the value of respecting individuals’ uniqueness and fostering compassion towards others while also acknowledging and respecting their personal autonomy. It emphasises the importance of cultivating genuine love and granting others the ability to be themselves, rather than objectifying them and treating them as mere possessions.
