It’s been exactly 264 days since Juliette last touched a human being.

Despite it being an accidental act, The Reestablishment has incarcerated her for murder. Experience the deadly touch of Juliette – a phenomenon that defies all explanation. As long as she doesn’t cause harm to others, she can rest assured that she is not the centre of attention. In these tumultuous times, there are greater concerns than the age of a single girl. Experience a world where epidemics are rampant, food is scarce, birds no longer take flight, and the clouds have lost their vibrant hues. The population is in a state of collapse, and the future is uncertain.

The Reestablishment locked up Juliette because they claimed to have the sole solution. The loss of life has been so great that the remaining population is muttering of war, and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe there’s more to Juliette than just a tortured spirit trapped in a toxic body. Perhaps she is the solution they have been looking for.

As a weapon, Juliette must make a decision. Or take up arms and fight.

Shatter Me Book Summary

The Shatter Me books are some of my favourites. However, I believe that readers who are prepared to invest some time into getting to know the writing style and the characters would like this book the most.

I’m as inert as novocaine. I have lost all of my feelings and emotions and have been rendered completely numb.
The only thing I ever said was a whisper.

The protagonist of Shatter Me, Juliette, has been imprisoned for 264 days in a dystopian future. Why? Since she lacks command over her ability to murder with a touch alone, she often does so. Juliette must figure out way to prevent the Reestablishment from transforming her into the monster she fears she has become when they intend to use her as a weapon.

There are numerous fantastic elements in this book. Let’s start with the author’s tone. Poetic and elegant, Mafi’s writing style brings Juliette’s inner world closer to the reader. That book won my heart. However, I am aware that not everyone enjoys this style, but I am confident that if you stick with the book despite your initial distaste, you will come to adore it.

That concept, in my opinion, is crucial to another part of this book. The individuals. It’s incredible to see how far these characters grow. While initially intriguing, their progression over the series is what makes them truly remarkable. Including, of course, Juliette herself. That breathtaking turn of events is shared by the love narrative as well. The romance may be cute and funny at first, but as Juliette matures, so do all of her friendships and romantic partnerships. The main connection and the characters in the first book don’t do much to explore new ground. It’s quite standard, and Juliette can be a bit too subdued at times. It is crucial that you see this series through to the end, and I can’t stress that enough. The book’s unforgettable characters (particularly Warner and Kenji) are the reason to read it.

Perhaps the weakest part is the world-building. While enjoyable, it’s hardly the most interesting or novel dystopian novel. I can see how it may be a drawback if you’re feeling dystopia-weary. The series improves and becomes more intriguing later on.
