They are broke, lost, and bolstered only by their friendship and drive when four classmates from a small Massachusetts college go to New York to make their way. The group consists of JB, a quick-witted and often vicious Brooklyn-born painter seeking admission into the art world; Malcolm, a dissatisfied architect at a prestigious firm; Willem, a handsome aspiring actor; and Jude, a clever and mysterious loner who acts as the group’s anchor.

As the years pass, the stains of addiction, success, and pride become more deeply embedded in their already complex relationships. Each of them eventually realises that Jude, despite being a terrifyingly gifted litigator, is a broken man whose mind and body are scarred by an unspeakable childhood and who is troubled by what he believes to be a level of trauma that he will not only be unable to escape, but that will also permanently shape the course of his life.
